“Benny Boy (or Girl?)” for Lisa, a grownup
Benny Boy has an awesome story. He belongs to Lisa, who is now 21, but Lisa has loved him since she was very little. He’s traveled with her everywhere, sat with her in the car on long road trips, and comforted her in her hospital bed while she battled cancer at 16. Lisa’s mom had a tough time getting a photo of Benny to send to me, since he still spends every night with Lisa in her bed at college. Here’s Lisa’s mom’s story about Benny Boy:
“When Lisa was first born, she had a pink bear the same as this blue bear – exact same brand etc. When we were on vacation in Virginia when she was about 3, she left the pink bear in a store. Well I am sure you know the panic that this caused when we discovered Benny missing (don’t ask me how a pink bear got the name Benny…don’t know). Well, we ended up going back to the stores we were in with absolutely no luck – Lisa was devastated and at 3 just didn’t understand where Benny went to. We had gotten it at a Hallmark store in upstate New York where we lived and here we were on vacation in Virginia trying to find another pink bear. No luck after going to many Hallmark stores but we were able to get a blue bear. We called the bear “Benny Boy” and Lisa always corrected us and said “no! it is Benny Girl” – because her pink bear was a girl ….. this went on for years and she always said it with a smile.”
